Infant & early childhood mental health is the social and emotional development of young children, involving skills such as self-confidence, motivation, persistence, curiosity, self-control and trust. These important skills affect future learning and growth. Children who are unable to attain early social and emotional milestones do not do well in early school years. Research indicates that children who start behind tend to stay behind. These children are at a higher risk for school problems and juvenile delinquency.
The Alliance co-chairs the Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health steering committee. The steering committee is comprised of providers, experts and advocates committed to promoting healthy social and emotional development of all Wisconsin children, birth to age five. Our goal is to implement the Wisconsin Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Plan.
This plan is a blueprint for a comprehensive system of care that includes prevention, early intervention and treatment.
