The Wisconsin Asthma Coalition (WAC) supports local asthma coalitions throughout Wisconsin working to implement asthma activities at the local level. Local asthma coalitions endorse WAC’s vision and mission and have adopted the Wisconsin Asthma Plan.

Local asthma coalition membership provides a strong link to WAC, coalition building, technical assistance, use of the WAC logo, grant opportunities and new partnerships.

WAC Mini-grants

As an initiative of WAC, the Alliance manages annual mini-grants to support the work of local coalitions through:

• Local Coalition Development – to assist in the creation of a new local asthma coalition and identify priorities consistent with the Wisconsin Asthma Plan.
• Established Coalition Projects – support existing local asthma coalitions to implement projects consistent with the Wisconsin Asthma Plan.

Mini-grant awardees September 2007– August 2008:

• Chippewa County Asthma Coalition: Implement Asthma 101, American Lung Association of WI (ALA/W) program and provide education and resources to Open Door Clinic, Inc. to improve asthma management.
• Community Asthma Network: Implement ALA/W programs: Asthma 101, Exercise & Asthma and Counting on You. Survey coaches, daycares, schools and Head Start to identify asthma education needs through partnership with Milwaukee School of Engineering Nursing students.
• Dane County Asthma Coalition: Continue the Emergency Department Asthma Care Improvement Project to ensure best practice guidelines are followed in hospital emergency departments.
• Fond du Lac Asthma Management Coalition: Implement ALA/W programs Asthma 101 and Exercise & Asthma, AIM newsletter, asthma day-camp, Tools for Schools from Environmental Protection Agency; and schools’ adoption of a "No Pet Policy".
• Fox Valley Asthma Coalition: Implement ALA/W programs Exercise & Asthma programs, Counting on You, Asthma 101 and Live Well, Breath Well.
• Green Bay Area Asthma Coalition: Increase primary care providers use of standardized educational materials. Implement 1 winter and 1 summer camp for children with asthma.
• Manitowoc County Asthma Coalition: Implement Counting on You, ALA/W, with 40 day care providers.
• Marathon County Asthma Coalition: Replicate Dane County Emergency Department Asthma Care Improvement Project with Marathon County Public Health Nursing staff completing follow-up.
