In Wisconsin, too many children and families are uninsured or underinsured. Nearly three-fifths of these families meet the income eligibility standards for Medicaid or BadgerCare, but for a variety of reasons remain uninsured. Barriers for families may include incorrect denials, required enrollment forms (i.e. employer verification form), mistrust in the health care system, assumption they are not eligible, stigma of being on state health insurance, and misassumption of being treated poorly at enrollment sites.
Families with annual incomes below 150% of poverty guidelines ($24,894 a year for a family of three, or $30,006 for four-person families) could have no out-of-pocket expenses. Other eligible families are expected to pay only five percent of their income.
Through service on the Steering Committee and as Co-Chair of the Outreach Committee, the Alliance works with Covering Kids and Families Wisconsin (CKF-WI) to reduce the number of uninsured. We are helping to ensure those who are eligible for Medicaid and BadgerCare know about it and can easily enroll in programs. CKF-WI is comprised of advocates, state policymakers, county income maintenance workers, health care providers and educators working to develop family friendly strategies to both inform and assist people applying for health care coverage programs and simplify enrollment and coordination processes.
