WOHC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The WOHC member
spotlight shines brightly on Warren
LeMay, DDS. LeMay is the chief dental officer for
the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services
(DHFS). LeMay completed his dental education at
Marquette University in 1972 and received a master’s in Public
Health from the University of Minnesota in 1980.
As echoed by
other spotlight members, LeMay views access to comprehensive
dental care by low-income families as the largest oral health
problem facing Wisconsin. Furthermore, LeMay recognizes
there is no quick fix to this complex issue that will require
many strategies to gain significant impact. LeMay
believes collaboration is key and the WOHC has an important
role to play in this effort along with the Wisconsin
legislature, state agencies, dental professionals, other
health care professionals, communities and families.
When asked to
comment on his concern about the disparities in the oral
health status of children in Wisconsin, LeMay said, "Use of
dental care is closely related to income, parental education,
race/ethnicity, age and sex. Children of color are less
likely to see a dentist in a year than white children and
experience fewer dental visits when they do obtain
care." The WOHC would like to express its appreciation
for LeMay and his continued dedication to the oral
health access problems.
This section of
the WOHC Oral Health eBytes will feature a dedicated
member/organization of the coalition. If you have any
recommendations, please contact Matt
