WOHC MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

warrenSM

The WOHC member spotlight shines brightly on Warren LeMay, DDS.  LeMay is the chief dental officer for the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS).  LeMay completed his dental education at Marquette University in 1972 and received a master’s in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 1980.

As echoed by other spotlight members, LeMay views access to comprehensive dental care by low-income families as the largest oral health problem facing Wisconsin.  Furthermore, LeMay recognizes there is no quick fix to this complex issue that will require many strategies to gain significant impact.  LeMay believes collaboration is key and the WOHC has an important role to play in this effort along with the Wisconsin legislature, state agencies, dental professionals, other health care professionals, communities and families.

When asked to comment on his concern about the disparities in the oral health status of children in Wisconsin, LeMay said, "Use of dental care is closely related to income, parental education, race/ethnicity, age and sex.  Children of color are less likely to see a dentist in a year than white children and experience fewer dental visits when they do obtain care."  The WOHC would like to express its appreciation for LeMay and his continued dedication to the oral health access problems.

This section of the WOHC Oral Health eBytes will feature a dedicated member/organization of the coalition. If you have any recommendations, please contact Matt Crespin

WISCONSIN NEWS

Remaining Seal-A-Smile funds awarded
The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) was awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration Dental Workforce Grant of $95,627 which will supplement the state Seal-A-Smile (SAS) program.  Recently, the majority of this funding was awarded to 8 programs statewide.  Two additional programs, Chippewa county and Sheboygan county health departments, will receive the remaining funding to expand.  Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Oral Health Coalition congratulate Chippewa and Sheboygan counties on their accomplishment and continued support.

Modification to Improve Dental Access is approved
The Department of Health and Family Services submitted to the Department of Administration a plan for expenditures of $28,730,100 of federal income augmentation funds.  In this plan $4,251,300 was reserved for providing dental services to low-income children in Wisconsin.  Funding will be used to increase support of community-based efforts to improve oral health. The Joint Finance Committee reviewed this recommendation and modified it slightly.  As a result, several programs received an earmark from this $4.2 million.  The following was awarded to programs statewide:

  • Marquette University School of Dentistry - $1 million
  • Scenic Bluffs Dental Clinic: Cashton - $350,000
  • Brown County Oral Health Partnership - $341,000
  • Madre Angela Dental Clinic: Milwaukee - $140,000
  • Family Health La Clinica - Wautoma - $75,000
  • Lakeshore Technical College - Sheboygan - $75,000
  • Tri County Dental Clinic - Fox Valley - $75,000
  • Oneida and Vilas Counties - $75,000
  • Rural Health Dental Clinic $75,000

In addition, approximately $1.8 million is available for one-time grants which can range from $25,000 - $500,000.  Click here to download the RFP.  The grants will be awarded to programs that can show longterm sustainability beyond the funding provided by this grant.  The RFP is due by February 5, 2007.
