WAC Logo ColorCHILD DEATH REVIEW SUMMIT: BEST PRACTICES IN PREVENTION AND LEGISLATION

At the first Child Death Review (CDR) Summit, 93 members of local CDR teams met in Kimberly, Wis., to share experiences in reviewing cases, learn about national CDR activity and discuss draft legislation for Wisconsin.

Attendees provided valuable input that will drive state legislation to create a comprehensive CDR system that emphasizes prevention. The purpose of the legislation is to address common issues faced by CDR teams, such as access to case records, confidentiality of information, application of open meetings law and discoverability of information shared at CDR meetings. Proposed legislation will include a method for providing technical assistance to local teams. A newly created state council will advise the legislature on prevention policy, develop standards and protocols to assist local teams, and encourage local team development. Legislation is expected to be introduced in early 2010.

Timothy E. Corden, MD, co-director of the policy core at the Injury Research Center, also highlighted how data collected from the review of child deaths can be used to champion local and statewide prevention efforts. CDR teams were encouraged to utilize the child injury prevention tool for best practices on prevention activities.

The Wisconsin Asthma Coalition (WAC) presented Gov. Jim Doyle and the City of Marshfield with the Taking Action for Asthma Award at the Oct. 2 fall meeting held in Marshfield.

Secretary Karen Timberlake (pictured) accepted the award on behalf of Gov. Doyle for his commitment to advancing our right to breathe smoke-free air in Wisconsin and providing a safer environment for those with asthma. Gov. Doyle has been extremely supportive of Wisconsin's smoke-free and tobacco control initiatives.

Mayor Chris Meyer accepted the award on behalf of the City of Marshfield for investing in the health of the community by becoming smoke-free. The City of Marshfield implemented its smoke-free workplace ordinance prior to Wisconsin enacting a statewide law.

WAC is committed to holding coalition meetings in communities with a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance. Learn more about WAC.

DollarSign WISCONSIN SEAL-A-SMILE RECEIVES ADDITIONAL FUNDING

The Wisconsin Division of Public Health (DPH), in partnership with Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin, is pleased to announce an increase in funding for the Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile program. A three-year Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) workforce grant will increase funding for school-based programs by $241,000. The funding will be used to expand current programs and target high-risk children. Funding also will provide $25,000 annual grants to Chippewa Valley Technical College and Southwestern Wisconsin Community Action Program for school-based dental sealant programs. The Alliance and DPH currently are reviewing proposals and will award mini grants to programs soon.

Delta Dental of Wisconsin graciously has matched the $241,000 HRSA grant for the next two years. Dennis Brown, president and CEO of Delta Dental said, "Delta Dental has long advocated sealants as part of the coverage offered under our group dental insurance plans. We also have a history of providing charitable grants to organizations that increase the availability of sealants to economically disadvantaged children." The Alliance, Delta Dental and DPH are partnering together to implement school-based care statewide. For more information on the availability of funds, contact Matt Crespin, oral health project manager with the Alliance.
