The Wisconsin Asthma Coalition (WAC) has unveiled the Wisconsin Asthma Plan 2009-2014 to serve as a blueprint for addressing asthma in Wisconsin for the next five years. The plan is based on the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma (NIH asthma guidelines). The plan represents the best efforts of WAC's leadership and members to develop a strategic plan to reduce the burden of asthma as a public health problem in Wisconsin. WAC has made great strides in improving asthma management since the release of the Wisconsin Asthma Plan 2003, but the burden of disease and its disproportionate impact remains a priority. The intent of the Wisconsin Asthma Plan 2009-2014 is to focus all activities on disparately impacted populations in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Asthma Plan 2009-2014 is divided into four priorities to reduce duplication and increase workgroup collaboration:

  • Surveillance: Improve and expand asthma surveillance in Wisconsin.
  • Standardized quality care: Increase implementation of the current NIH asthma guidelines for optimal diagnosis and management of asthma by all health care providers.
  • Education: Increase asthma education consistent with the current NIH asthma guidelines.
  • Environment: Reduce or control environmental factors associated with asthma.

WAC's dedicated statewide partners will work strategically to meet the challenges for the next five years and beyond. WAC encourages all partners to seek ways to achieve the important goals and objectives in this plan. For more information, contact Kristen Grimes, asthma project manager, at (414) 292-4001.

$NATIONAL CHILDREN'S STUDY COMES TO WAUKESHA COUNTY

This spring, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and The Medical College of Wisconsin joined forces to work on the National Children's Study, the largest and most comprehensive study of child health and development in the United States.

The National Children's Study is designed to answer the question: How do children's environments - the air they breathe, the water they drink and the community they live in - affect their health and well-being?

In May, National Children's Study representatives visited Waukesha County neighborhoods to encourage women who are pregnant or may become pregnant in the next five years to participate. Families living in eligible neighborhoods also received a letter describing the study and enrollment details.

The National Children's Study will follow 100,000 children across the U.S. from before birth to adulthood. This information may allow researchers to determine the root causes of many childhood and adult diseases, including asthma and allergies, autism, obesity and diabetes. Waukesha County was selected as one of 105 communities across the country where the study will take place.

The National Children's Study seeks volunteer participants from preselected neighborhoods in 10 municipalities, including Big Bend, Brookfield, Dousman, Hartland, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, Sussex and Waukesha.
