  FALL SAFETY

We are approaching the two-year anniversary of the Childhood Injury Prevention Network. We continue to seek input on the network and welcome any thoughts or feedback.

Over a year ago, we began developing a survey in an effort to conduct gaps analysis of Wisconsin Childhood Injury prevention programs. This survey will soon be sent via email. Please complete the online survey to help us with future planning and for a chance at winning a pack of safety devices.

DATA AND EVALUATION

There is new research making connections between family life and children's bullying behaviors. Research shows children raised by authoritarian parents - parents who are demanding, directive and unresponsive - are most prone to act out bullying behaviors. In addition, there were parallels showing children raised by nurturing, warm and responsive parents are less likely to bully. To learn more click here.

Mini Grants Available to Child Death Review Teams

One-time mini grants of $5,000 are available for Child Death Review Team (CDRT) development and enhancement. These funds are meant as seed funds to create a new team or re-invigorate an existing team. Funds may be used for costs such as meeting accommodations and refreshments, and staff devoted to meeting preparation and coordination.

  • Grant funds will only be awarded to recognized CDRT(s) within a county or region.
  • Grant funds will only be awarded to government agencies or 501C(3) organizations sanctioned to be the recipient on behalf of the CDRT(s).

LEGISLATION

Last December President Bush signed into law the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007. This law will take effect December 20, 2008 and recently received national attention. A pool contractor on the East coast has been charged with second degree reckless homicide for failure to install the appropriate safety devices in a pool. The new law includes public pools and requires anti-entrapment devices be used with pool drains to prevent drowning from suctions created at the drain. Many of our public pools in Wisconsin have not made this change and are unaware of the new requirement.

PROGRAMS AND BEST PRACTICES

For many, back-to-school means establishing routine, buying school supplies, and preparing children for school. For many children the real concern centers around being bullied. Bullying is not new but has become more widespread. According to research from the National Bullying Campaign, as many as 160,000 students may stay home on any given day for fear of being bullied. PBS has put together "In the Mix: Stop Bullying...Take a Stand" using the HRSA's Stop Bullying Now! recommendations. Check out this program lead by Erika Harold, Miss America 2003.
