centers open to the public statewide. Safety centers sell
items to protect children such as car seats, carbon monoxide
detectors, oven locks, and more at a discounted cost.
The Kohl's Safety Center has two locations: Madison and Watertown. The Aspirus
Children's Safety Center has four
locations: Wausau, Stevens Point, Medford and
Rhinelander.

DATA AND
EVALUATION
A special issue of the American Journal of Lifestyle
Medicine, entitled Injury Prevention: A Medical and Public
Health Imperative (January 2010) addresses
the topic of unintentional injury prevention as a
lifestyle problem. This issue contains many useful
articles for injury prevention professionals.
In a report published by the Journal
of the American Medical Association, researchers
reported that babies who died from Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome had 26 percent lower levels of the brain
chemical serotonin. Research also found 22 percent of
infants had lower levels of tryptophan hydroxylase, an
enzyme needed to make serotonin. Serotonin has a variety
of functions in the brain; including helping regulate
breathing, heart rate and blood pressure during
sleep. | | |
FUNDING
Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program
(HWPP)
HWPP supports projects addressing public health
improvement through a community-MCW academic partnership
that will:
- be important to specific communities and/or
populations in Wisconsin;
- demonstrate a commitment to making significant
advancements in health improvement;
- use methods that are relevant, acceptable,
culturally sensitive and appropriate to the community;
and,
- produce evidence-based, measureable outcomes that
are meaningful to the community.
HWPP funds projects in two categories:
- Development Awards - New partnerships as well as
previously and currently funded community-MCW academic
partnerships are eligible to apply for awards that are
up to 2-years in duration to build synergy and
strength around the development of a pilot project
aimed at testing or demonstrating the feasibility of
an idea.
- Impact Awards - For the current funding cycle
(6th), only previously and currently funded HWPP
partnership projects (both Development and Impact) are
eligible to apply for an Impact Award (up to five
years) to build on the work of their previously funded
HWPP project.
