DATA AND
EVALUATION
ATV report The U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued its annual report of ATV-related deaths and
injuries for 2007 . Although incident
reporting is ongoing, 542 ATV-related deaths have been
reported for 2007. The CPSC estimates 150,900
ATV-related injuries were treated in emergency rooms
last year. Children under the age of 16 accounted for 20
percent of those deaths and 27 percent of those
injuries. The report also includes ATV-related
fatalities broken down by state.
Safe roads A new tool is
available from the Center for Excellence in Rural Safety
(CERS). This Web site, developed by the researchers at
the University of Minnesota's Center for Excellence in
Rural Safety (CERS), allows users to enter their address
to see a map or satellite image of all of the road
fatalities that have occurred in their area. The search
can be narrowed to see the age of the driver, whether
speeding or drinking was a factor and if the driver was
wearing a seatbelt. View Web
site.
Burden of Suicide Report The
Injury Research Center at the Medical College of
Wisconsin has partnered with Mental Health America of
Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Health
Services to produce The Burden of Suicide in Wisconsin
Report which provides detailed information
about suicidal behavior, including completed suicides
and attempts. The report provides not only detailed
breakdowns by age, sex, race/ethnicity and other
categories, but also information about the circumstances
involved. Circumstances, such as presence of depressed
mood or mental health problems, presence of alcohol or
other drugs in the body, life circumstances and more are
important for prevention efforts. We hope this report
will help decision-makers, mental health and public
health professionals, mental health consumers, advocates
and family members and others among the general public
interested in suicide prevention address the problem
through better data. The report also contains extensive
information about best practices in suicide prevention.
Some county level data is provided in the report and
more detailed county level reports will be
forthcoming. | | |

LEGISLATION
Protect Our Children Act On
October 13, President Bush signed into law the Protect
Our Children Act, which is designed to keep Internet sex
predators away from children.
The Protect Our Children Act
creates the largest law enforcement effort to combat
online child pornography. It requires Internet companies
to report child pornography and adds more than $320
million to the U.S. Justice Department to fight Internet
crimes against children.
NHTSA school bus
rule The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) issued a final rule requiring lap and shoulder
belts in new small school buses (generally
holding 15 passengers or fewer).
States and
local jurisdictions have the option to require lap and
shoulder belts in large school buses. If states or
localities choose to require seatbelts in large school
buses, the final rule sets a performance standard for
those belts. Both the lap and shoulder belt requirement
for small school buses and the performance standard for
lap and shoulder belts in large school buses apply to
buses manufactured on or after October 21, 2011.
The NHTSA rule also requires seat backs on all
new school buses be heightened to a minimum of 24 inches
to improve compartmentalization. It also requires seat
cushion latches. These requirements apply to school
buses manufactured on or after October 21,
2009. | | |
PROGRAMS AND BEST
PRACTICES
BullyFree
Basics BullyFree Basics - This
innovative online bullying prevention program, available
for fourth and fifth grade, was developed in
collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction. It helps counselors and teachers increase
awareness about bullying and gives students the skills
they need to prevent and stop bullying. Created by the
experts at Children's Health Education Center,
BullyFree Basics uses an interactive approach,
along with a variety of activities to help fourth and
fifth grade students tackle one of our schools' most
troubling issues.
BullyFree Basics
teaches the different types of bullying, what to do
when bullying occurs and how to help create a bully-free
classroom environment. Pretests and posttests help you
track your students' learning, and an innovative
learning management system monitors each student's
progress through the program. Students will have fun
while learning and retaining important concepts. Learn more.
SIDS
research Research done in California has
confirmed that the use of a fan during sleep can reduce
the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Learn

represents all IP addresses seen in Wisconsin from
January 1 to October 19, 2008 that were identified as
download candidates for images known, or suspected, to
be child pornography. This map helps identify areas of
the state that have higher incidences of child

SUCCESS
STORIES
Anna VanWey, home visitor for the Family Smart Kid
Friendly program, assists parents in childproofing their
homes. After learning about elevated lead counts in
toys, Anna now shares that information with her
families. One family went to their child's room and
found six recalled toys and immediately threw the toys
away.
Kudos to Anna for working to keep kids safe. For the
latest recalls visit Department of Health
Services.
Have you started a new program? Have your programs
resulted in saved lives? Large or small this is your
