Just Released

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of 1 million Simplicity cribs, in which at least three children have died. CPSC urges all parents and caregivers who have a Simplicity crib to immediately log on to the CPSC Web site to see if they have a recalled model. Childhood Injury Prevention and Death Review Tools

  • Booster Seat Law Public Fact Sheet.
  • Booster Seat Video - NHTSA announces the availability of a new roll-call video to assist law enforcement agencies in enforcing booster seat use requirements now in effect in more than two-thirds of the States, and the District of Columbia. Knowing that law enforcement agencies appreciate specially designed tools to facilitate the enforcement of new requirements, this new six-minute roll-call video was developed to help officers enforce booster seat requirements during traffic stops. "Booster Seats -- The Missing Link" provides meaningful details about the need for booster seat use, as well as moving personal accounts about booster seats, and suggestions for how best to enforce these new requirements.
  • Child Passenger Safety Tips.
  • Heads Up: Concussion in High School Sports - Free toolkit developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for coaches, athletic directors and athletic trainers. The toolkit includes information on how to prevent concussions, identify symptoms and the immediate steps to take when an athlete shows signs of a concussion.
  • Medicaid Reimbursement for Car Seats Is Cost Effective Health Policy - A study released from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) shows that distributing car safety seats among economically disadvantaged children could be as cost-effective as long-established federal vaccination programs.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) – Access resources on the dangers of consumer fireworks and view the video of Michael Shannon, a three-year old killed when a legal consumer firework struck him in the head as he stood more than 40 feet away between his father’s legs at a family 4th of July celebration. According to a recent NFPA report, 10,800 people were treated at hospital emergency rooms for firework-related injuries in 2005. More than half of the firework injuries were burns. Approximately 29 percent were contusions or lacerations. Fireworks also cause approximately 25,000 grass, brush, dumpster and other fires each year. NFPA holds a steadfast position against the use of all consumer fireworks.
  • Primary Enforcement of Seatbelt Laws - An issue brief titled Primary Enforcement of Seatbelt Laws: A Means for Decreasing Injuries, Deaths and Crash-Related Costs in Wisconsin, provides an overview of the evidence, benefits and other considerations related to primary enforcement of wearing seatbelts in Wisconsin.
  • Proposed Floatation Device Legislation - State legislators recently introduced a bill that calls for children under a certain age to wear a secure floatation device when boating. The matter has been referred to senate and assembly committees for review.
  • Regulation of Unsafe Children’s Products - Wisconsin State Senate Bill 37 regulates the sale of products designed for the care of, or use by, children under 12 years of age. The bill also will prohibit child care providers from using or having on the premises a children’s product or baby crib whose commercial use is prohibited.
  • School Bus Safety Bill Under Construction - Assembly Bill 203, if passed, would require school buses to be equipped with an electronic seat check reminder system requiring the bus driver to walk to the rear of the bus to check each seat for passengers and deactivate the system or alarm prior to exiting the bus.
  • Wisconsin Teen Suicide Fact Sheet - Developed by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Bureau of Community Health Promotion, Injury Prevention Program.
  • Wisconsin Violent Death Reporting System Annual Report - Developed by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services Division of Public Health, Injury Prevention Program in collaboration with the Medical College of Wisconsin Firearm Injury Center.
